Life & death

Hardcore Mode

An opt-in permadeath track, layered on top of the module's normal death/respawn flow rather than replacing it. Taking the pledge changes what happens the next time you die - nothing about ordinary play changes until then.

Opting in

A conversation option grants a persistent journal entry ("hardcore") at stage 1 - the pledge. Nothing else changes yet; you play normally, with normal respawns, until the pledge is actually tested.

What happens when you die

  1. On death, if the hardcore journal is at stage 1, it advances to stage 2 - the pledge is now "spent."
  2. You still respawn the normal way (a full resurrect and heal at the usual respawn point) - hardcore mode doesn't block that.
  3. But because the journal is now at stage 2, the moment you respawn you're immediately redirected: cleared of all actions and jumped straight to a waypoint named afterlife instead of being left at the normal respawn point.

The redirect follows you

It isn't just a one-time jump on respawn. Any area whose entry script includes the same check will bounce a stage-2 character straight back to the afterlife waypoint the instant they try to enter - so there's no wandering back into the living world on foot once the pledge is spent.

What this doesn't do

This is a redirect, not a lock: nothing here deletes the character, forces a logout, or strips inventory. The enforcement is entirely "you no longer have anywhere to go but the Afterlife" - see that page for what's actually built there today.
